Ecosystems

Producers, consumers, and decomposers all play a vital role in ecosystems. Join Annie and her family as they compete to win the Eco Outside competition and look to find evidence of producers, consumers and decomposers right outside their door – bad dad jokes and all! You’ll learn key vocabulary, investigate the various organism roles in ecosystems, and get to learn more about the ecosystems outside your door!

Ecosystems Learning Experiences

Each of the activities below are an opportunity for you to discover how producers, consumers, and decomposers each play an important role in ecosystems.

Outdoor Safety

As you head outside to explore, be sure to have safety in mind! Are you dressed appropriately for the weather? How about sunscreen, a hat, raincoat, or bug spray? Be sure you are with an adult, or they know where you are. Keep to areas you or someone you are with are familiar with. Be aware of your surroundings. There is so much to see and explore right outside your door - have fun, be curious, and be safe!

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

EcologyOnline’s Ecosystems Module incorporates the Next Generation Science Standards "Science and Engineering Practices" as students explore, engage and attempt to make sense of outdoor phenomena. These practices reflect what scientists use to investigate the world, and are skills and knowledge sets that help students internalize science learning. As students engage in learning about producers, consumers, and decomposers, they will be engaging in a full range of cognitive, social, and physical practices that scientific inquiry requires.
