Geology

There is a lot to understand about how the earth beneath our feet shapes ecosystems. Join Rockie Rockland for a behind the scenes look at the 2nd Annual Rock-a-con and see how Dr. Sol Boden and Rockie realize how much both soil and rocks matter! You’ll learn key vocabulary, investigate the connection between what’s below ground and what’s above, and get to check out the geology right outside your door!

Geology Learning Experiences

Each of the activities below are an opportunity for you to discover how what’s beneath your feet shapes what’s above the ground.

Outdoor Safety

As you head outside to explore, be sure to have safety in mind! Are you dressed appropriately for the weather? How about sunscreen, a hat, raincoat, or bug spray? Be sure you are with an adult, or they know where you are. Keep to areas you or someone you are with are familiar with. Be aware of your surroundings. There is so much to see and explore right outside your door - have fun, be curious, and be safe!

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

EcologyOnline’s Geology Module incorporates the Next Generation Science Standards “Science and Engineering Practices” as students explore, engage and attempt to make sense of outdoor phenomena. These practices reflect what scientists use to investigate the world, and are skills and knowledge sets that help students internalize science learning. As students engage in learning about geology, they will be engaging in a full range of cognitive, social, and physical practices that scientific inquiry requires.
